Solaris Developer Quiz May 9, 2007
What is the maximum number of probes that you can create with DTrace?
a) 25
b) 42
c) 30,000
d) Infinite
The correct answer is d.
The kernel comes with a fixed number of probe points, however, with the ability to create probes dynamically, "on the fly", the correct answer is "theoretically" infinite. The practical number is limited by the memory size.
'25' is the number of pennies in a US quarter, but far less than the number of probes we would give you to work with.
'42' is the answer to Everything, true, but alas, not this.
'30,000' is the fixed number of kernel probes you start with right out of the box. Really. 30K. Frankly, pretty impressive.
