SAN Hardware Components
Hosts
Hosts are the reason that the SAN exists. The entire goal of a SAN is to provide storage to hosts. Some low end SANs only support Intel-based servers running Windows NT,Windows 2000, or NetWare. Better SANs can support hosts running WindowsNT, Windows 2000, NetWare, Linux, AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, and IRIX.
Host Bus Adapters
A host bus adapter (HBA) connects a server system to an external Fibre Channel storage system or to a Fibre Channel switch. In order to get the host operating system to recognize the HBA, a HBA driver must be installed.

Switches, hubs, and directors are used to interconnect devices in a SAN fabric. Switches provide 100MB/s unblocked throughput on each port as opposed to hubs that provide 100MB/s shared bandwidth. Directors typically have the ability to connect Fibre Channel as well as other technologies such as ESCON.

Disk Processor Enclosures
A disk processor enclosure (DPE) is the base storage unit in a SAN. A DPE includesa storage processor that is responsible for host communication and implementing RAID functions. DAEs can add storage capacity by connecting to DPEs.
