All you need to do is to enable "xdmcp". go get some document.
I don't understand those weiird paths and confs of BSD. So you have to guess some detail.
1. edit your kdm configure files. See the section named [Xdmcp], enable it.
(In by box: /usr/local/kde/share/config/kdm/kdmrc)
2. start kdm as following
kdm -daemon
3. check if 177/udp is opened.
Finally, I suggest you try an LFS (http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/).
After constructing an OS from zero, you got understand what and how is an OS doing on earth!
Don't just use an all-in-one distribution ( *BSD/Redhat/Debian... Whatever),
