Executive Summary
Business success increasingly relies onservers for business critical operations. As result, server availability is a higher priority than ever. Demandsof a “24x7” global marketplace mean systems must be online or customers may belost. A heavily used e-mail or databaseserver can cost a business thousands of dollars in lost productivity – orbusiness – if it fails.
Failover clustering is an importantfeature of the Windows Server platform that can improve server availability. When one server fails, another server begins to provide service in its place. This process is called failover. Failover clusters in Windows Server 2008 R2provide seamless easy-to-deploy high availability for important databases, messaging servers, file and print services, and virtualized workloads.
Windows Server 2008 brought many new orenhanced configuration, management, and diagnostic features to failoverclustering that made setting up and managing the clusters easier for IT staff. Windows Server 2008 R2 builds on that workwith improvements aimed at enhancing the validation process for a new orexisting clusters, simplifying the management of clustered virtual machines(which run with Hyper-V), providing a Windows PowerShell interface, andproviding more options for migrating settings from one cluster to another. These enhancements combine to provide a nearturn-key solution for making applications and services highly available.
Easy Installation & Supportability
Windows Server 2008 introduced aWizard-based approach to configuration and validation. In Windows Server 2008 R2, those features areexpanded. The cluster validation tool now includes additional “best practices”tests and collects information about the configuration for supportability anddocumentation. The hundreds of tests automatically run by the Validation Wizardvirtually eliminate misconfigured clusters. In addition, enhanced loggingcapabilities and performance counters allow administrators to more efficientlyand effectively monitor and optimize cluster performance.
Expanded Options for Easy Manageability
Harried IT Professionals are alwayslooking for ways to save time. The introductionof Windows PowerShell – a object-oriented command line shell and scriptingtechnology that uses consistent syntax and naming patterns across Windows Server2008 R2 roles and features – provides powerful ways to script clusterconfiguration and management tasks. Thisfeature means administrators can spend more time managing applications - nottheir cluster.
Windows Server 2008 R2 also offersexpanded migrating options with the new Migration Wizard. Migrating clusters between versions ofWindows Server used to be limited, now everyin-box workload can be migrated to Windows Server 2008 R2.
Innovation
Today’s IT world is a virtual world. Consolidating with virtualization reduces thenumber of physical systems to manage, but what happens when one of thosephysical servers has a problem? Allyour application eggs are in one basket. The importance of protecting virtualized workloads is clear. Windows Server 2008 R2 Failover Clustering requiresno special tools so administrators can easily create a highly available virtualmachine. It’s never been simpler.
Windows Server 2008 R2 introduces anexciting new feature called Cluster Shared Volumes (CSV) that dramaticallysimplifies the configuration of clustered virtual machines (supported by HyperV). CSV builds upon NTFS to simplifystorage management, reduces migration and failover times, enables bettercapacity planning and helps provide improved resilience and availability.
Of course, the other reason CSV is soexciting is because it is an enabler of Live Migration. Live Migration allowsVirtual Machines from one server to another while connected clients perceive nodown-time.
