A unique feature available in every Brocade® SilkWorm® 2 Gbit/sec fabric switch,
Brocade virtual channel technology represents an important breakthrough in the design
of large Storage Area Networks (SANs). To ensure reliable, high-speed Inter-Switch Link
(ISL) communications, this technology logically partitions bandwidth within each ISL into
eight virtual channels and prioritizes data traffic to optimize performance. As a result,
virtual channel technology improves ISL resource utilization to reduce hardware costs
and eliminate the need to manually fine-tune SAN fabrics for maximum performance.
In addition, virtual channel technology works in conjunction with Brocade ISL Trunking
to improve the efficiency of switch-to-switch communications, simplify SAN fabric design,
and reduce the total cost of SAN ownership even further.
