Ports can be compiled on any version of FreeBSD. There is only 1 ports tree. So long as the port is not marked as "for this specific version or architecture" then you can compile it on anything.
However, packages can only be installed on the same version of FreeBSD as they were compiled on (with a little lee-way thanks to the compat ports). IOW, if you are running FreeBSD 5.x, then you want to install packages compiled for FreeBSD 5.x.
