Physical Level:Sectors:the building block. (Also called blocks) (512 bytes) = 0.5 KB.Track: a circle of sectors.Cylinder: A stack of tracks.Logical Level:Slices = Partitions.Slices are groupings of cylinders.OS Level (Solaris)Naming and Directory ConventionA disk is divided into 8 slices from 0 to 7.By convention, slice 2 represent the entire disk. A slice is defined by the starting and ending cylinder number. A slice is identified by eight charaters stringcx : the controller number. the HBA card. tx : the target number. the hardware address assigned to each disk drive. (usually target 6 meaning the CD/DVD drive)(also referes to SCSI ID)dx : the disk number. The logical unit number. The number of disks at target location.sx : the slice number ranging from 0 to 7./device: physical device names. /dev : logical device names. cxtxdxsx each physical device will have an entry in both: (This is what OS would use.)/dev/dsk : block device (What the OS operates on, block sizes are 8K for ufs.)/dev/rdsk: character device (or called Raw devices)respectively. View and Administration of Disks:view: 1. /etc/path_to_inst2. prtconf3. format (Very Useful!)check devices and their partition table. System hardware changes:touch /reconfigurereboot.devfsadm : dynamically configure the system without rebooting.(updates the /path_to_inst, /device, /dev/dsk and /dev/rdsk). devfsadm -c : specific device classdevfsadm -i : specific driver.devfsadm -C : cleanup the information for those destoried devices.
