What is SFP?
Small form factor pluggable (SFP) optical transceiver modules combine
transmitter and receiver functions in one compact, flexible and low
cost package format. Originally defined in 2001 under a multi-source
agreement (MSA) by fifteen module manufacturers, SFP modules are used
to support Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet applications with data
rates between 1Gbps and 4Gbps, with a roadmap to operate up to 8Gbps.
Worldwide shipments of Gigabit Ethernet Fiber ports and Fibre
Channel Switch ports are expected to grow to over 17 million by 2008.
The SFP/SFF form factor, with its small footprint and integrated
digital diagnostics, has become the dominant optical module for storage
and communication systems up to 2.5 Gbps.
