Overview

It is now well-known that multihop wireless networks are fraught with significant capacity problems. Due to the broadcast nature of wireless transmissions -- resulting in interference -- only one transmission can occur in a physical neighborhood. In recent years several diversity techniques have been used to get around this fundamental limitation. One such diversity technique now being widely studied is use of multiple frequency channels. Use of multiple frequency channels enables conflict free transmissions in a physical neighborhood so long as pairs of transmitters and receivers can tune to different nonconflicting channels (which current wireless protocols like IEEE 802.11 already provide).
In this project we propose new MAC protocols for wireless ad-hoc networks which utilize multiple channels to improve the capacity of the network. We have developed two new multichannel MAC protocols, xRDT (based on Reciever-directed transmission scheme discussed in [1]) where nodes can switch channels arbitrarily and LCM-MAC where nodes switch channels only after some local coordinations. Our ns2 simulation results show that these protocols significantly outperform single channel IEEE 802.11 and some past works in this field.
