Carrier grade Linux
(CGL) has now been successfully ported to Sun's chip multi-threaded
(CMT) UltraSPARC T2 processor. The Wind River Linux 3.0 and Workbench
development suite is now available on Sun's open CMT processor
platforms and on Sun Netra T5220 servers, Netra CP3260 ATCA Blade
Servers and the UltraSPARC T2 Reference Design Kit.
The networking industry now has a fully integrated, optimized
and tested solution of the leading multi-core processing hardware and
CGL, enabling companies to quickly develop and deploy next-generation
networking applications, thanks to Sun and Wind River.
"The combination of Sun's enterprise class UltraSPARC CMT
platforms and Wind River's Carrier Grade Linux gives telecom and
networking system developers a new and significantly superior vehicle
for delivering their most mission critical applications to enterprise
and service provider customers," said Mike Knudsen, vice president, Sun
OEM.
Mike Langlois, general manager of the Networking and
Telecommunications Business Unit at Wind River, observed that,
"Implementing high-performance multicore processing solutions into
networking elements offers many benefits to telecom and networking
equipment providers. By leveraging an integrated solution like Sun's
UltraSPARC T2 and Wind River's multicore-aware Linux and development
tools, equipment providers can develop sophisticated applications that
fully exploit the use of each core for ultimate performance, cost and
throughput efficiency."
An important aspect of this announcement is that it highlights
the openness of Sun's CMT platform and substantially expands the range
of embedded system applications that can be served with Sun's CMT
technology. This development also brings the benefits of Sun's CMT
processors, such as low power per thread, integrated crypto
functionality, dual on-board 10 gigabit Ethernet (GbE) network
interface units, and industry standard bus interconnect technology, to
a wide range of embedded system applications such as load balancing,
routing, security and application acceleration.
