for example, to build a linux-based smoke monitor, what shall I do?

I have a dream that I'd build a system which controls any electronic device  in my room.

but how to?

I need your help.

THX.

Control? electronic devices? That means you need the "Allspark" and the help from "Optima Prime". Hehe.

Just kidding, ok, uh, be serious:

It depends on what kind of control. If you have a microchip in each device that is programmable, it is possible that you can control them. Driver is the wrapper of the microcode/firmware of the device. And kernel is the container of various drivers.

The smoke monitor will need a chip, a set of API, etc. Actually, you may want to ask yourself which kind of functions you are expecting from the smoke monitor before you install Linux on it.
