Notice: HP ProLiant DL580 G5 Server and HP ProLiant BL680c G5 Server Blade - Minimum Operating System Support of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (AMD64/EM64T) and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (AMD64/EM64T) Required for Intel Xeon 7400 Series Processor
NOTICE: The information in this document, including products and software versions, is current as of the Release Date. This document is subject to change without notice.
Release Date: 2009-02-02
Last Updated: 2009-02-02
DESCRIPTION
Minimum distributions for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (AMD64/EM64T) and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (AMD64/EM64T) (outlined in the Details section below) are required to support the Intel Xeon 7400 series processor in the HP ProLiant DL580 G5 server and HP ProLiant BL680c G5 server blade.
Refer to the information below for full details on this minimum Linux operating system support.
DETAILS
The following distributions of Linux are required to support HP ProLiant DL580 G5 server and ProLiant BL680c G5 server blades that are utilizing the Intel Xeon 7400 series processor:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux
For Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (AMD64/EM64T), upgrade to the 5.2 errata kernel 2.6.18-92.1.10:
http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2008-0612.html
For Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (AMD64/EM64T), upgrade to Update 7.
For additional information, refer to the KB article " What version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux is required to support Intel Xeon 7400 series processors " at the following Red Hat website:
http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/docs/DOC-15134
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server
For SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (AMD64/EM64T), upgrade to a Service Pack 2 errata kernel later than 2.6.16.60-0.33.
For SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 (AMD64/EM64T), upgrade to Service Pack 4 errata kernel 2.6.5-7.315.
If an HP ProLiant DL580 G5 server or HP ProLiant BL680c G5 server blade is running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (AMD64/EM64T), Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (AMD64/EM64T), SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 (AMD64/EM64T), or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (AMD64/EM64T) that is not at the minimum Linux operating system update when configured with an Intel Xeon 7400 series processor, the following warning messages may be displayed in the output of the command "dmesg:"
"MCE: warning: using only 7 banks"
OR
"MCE: warning: using only 6 banks"
OR
"MCE: warning: using only 6 of 7 banks"
The above messages are displayed because the distribution of Linux supports a maximum of six Machine Check Exception (MCE) banks and the Intel Xeon Processor 7400 Series has more than six MCE banks.
This is not ProLiant server-specific and the above MCE bank warning messages may be displayed on any server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux (AMD64/EM64T) or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (AMD64/EM64T) using the Intel Xeon 7400 series processor. This only affects AMD64/EM64T Linux distributions and does not affect x86 Linux distributions.
