Competitive Comparison: \r\nEMC CLARiiON CX4 Series vs. 3PAR \r\nFacts and Figures\r\nCLARiiON 3PAR\r\n• 138,000 units sold since 2002\r\n• # 1 in revenue share of mid-tier storage as of Q1 2008 \r\n• Gained 21 percent market share in mid-tier storage from Q1 2002 to Q1 2008 • Negligible market share in the low single digits since its inception\r\n• Not listed as an individual company, included in “other suppliers” category\r\n• Have not gained significant market share since its product began shipping in 2002\r\n \r\nProduct Line-Up\r\nFeatures AX4 CX4-120 E200 CX4-240 CX4-480 S400 CX4-960 S800\r\nMaximum number of drives 60 120 128 240 480 640 960 1, 280\r\nMaximum TB (raw) 60 120 96 231 471 300 951 600\r\nDrive types SAS, SATA FC, SATA FC, SATA FC, SATA FC, SATA, SSD FC, SATA FC, SATA, SSD FC, SATA\r\nNumber of Controllers 1 or 2 2 2 2 2 4 or 4 2 2, 4, 6, or 8\r\nTotal memory 2 GB 6 GB 8 GB 8 GB 16 GB 32 GB 32 GB 64 GB\r\nNumber of iSCSI host ports 4 8 4 12 12 8 12*/16 16\r\nNumber of Fibre Channel host ports 4 12 12 12 16 64 16*/24 128\r\nRAID levels 1/0, 3, 5 1/0, 3, 5, 6 1/0, 5/0 1/0, 3, 5, 6 1/0, 3, 5, 6 1/0, 5/0 1/0, 3, 5, 6 1/0, 5/0\r\nSpare disks Global Global Chunklets Global Global Chunklets Global Chunklets\r\nSparing method Rebuild Pro-active Rebuild Pro-active Pro-active Rebuild Pro-active Rebuild\r\n \r\n* With back-end expansion kit. \r\n = CLARiiON platforms \r\nKey CLARiiON CX4 Series Advantages Over 3PAR\r\nBest Energy Efficiency:\r\n• High-performance Flash drives provide power savings for IO-intensive applications, consuming less energy than standard Fibre Channel drives per IO transaction.\r\n 3PAR does not offer flash drives.\r\n• Low-power SATA drives consume 32 percent less energy than traditional SATA drives.\r\n 3PAR does not offer low-power SATA drives.\r\n• Disk Spin Down option for inactive drives further conserves power and cooling (available in 2009).\r\n 3PAR does not offer disk spin down.\r\nLowest Cost of Ownership:\r\n• 3PAR host ports are not externally assessable and do not have a hot-pluggable capability like CLARiiON CX4 UltraFlex technology slots provide.\r\n 3PAR requires a controller node failover to replace or add host ports.\r\n• 1 TB SATA drives offer more capacity within the CLARiiON CX4 series arrays.\r\n 3PAR only offers 750 GB SATA drives.\r\n• CLARiiON CX4 series provides predictable performance as storage capacity increases.\r\n 3PAR cannot guarantee predictable performance due to its architecture, which stripes data across all available drives in 256 MB “chunklets.”\r\nHighest Availability—Five 9s (99.999 percent): \r\n• Better quality/Five 9s with stringent criteria (see IDC validation)\r\n 3PAR has no stated availability.\r\n• Hot pluggable front-end port expansion with UltraFlex technology enables EMC to future-proof front-end connectivity without suffering array downtime.\r\n 3PAR cannot hot-plug ports. \r\n• NEBS-certified for reliable operations in harsh environments, including excessive temperature, humidity, and vibration\r\n 3PAR is not NEBS-certified.\r\nNondisruptive Data Mobility:\r\n• Virtual LUN capabilities transparently move volumes to lower- or higher-performing drives and offer the ability to change RAID types, all while data is still available.\r\n 3PAR’s Dynamic Optimization is highly manually-intensive and impacts performance.\r\nOptimized for Virtualization\r\nAll the competitive differentiators above are equally—if not more—important in VMware environments. Uptime and data protection applies to hundreds of virtual machines as opposed to dozens of physical servers.\r\n• With CLARiiON and VMware, service-level management can be enforced by combining EMC Navisphere Quality of Service Manager and VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS). (See white paper for more information.)\r\n 3PAR does not offer any level of quality of service.\r\nHow to Handle 3PAR Competitive Claims\r\nObjection: “3PAR is easier to use than CLARiiON.”\r\nResponse: EMC Navisphere Task Bar provides customers the ability to provision storage with a few simple clicks. Furthermore, CLARiiON CX4 series provides the option to provision standard RAID to ensure top performance for Tier 1 applications as well as ease of use with CLARiiON Virtual Provisioning. 3PAR does not provide the option to guarantee performance.\r\nObjection: “3PAR gives you the ability to save on storage utilization with Thin Provisioning.”\r\nResponse: CLARiiON CX4 series offers CLARiiON Virtual Provisioning, and also provides the option to provision standard RAID Groups for those applications that require guaranteed performance. 3PAR cannot do this. \r\nObjection: “3PAR has better scalability.”\r\nResponse: The CLARiiON CX4-960 scales to 960 drives and 960 TB. Although 3PAR’s S800 model scales to 1,280 drives, it is still limited to a maximum of \r\n600 TB.\r\nAdditional Resources\r\nFor competitive help, use these resources:\r\n• Powerlink’s 3PAR page \r\n• “White Paper: Maintaining End-to-End Service Levels for VMware Virtual Machines Using VMware DRS and EMC Navisphere Quality of Service Manager”\r\nIf you have questions, contact your EMC Account Manager or local channel management team. \r\n |
