Requirements for 2,66GHz cpu's in Mx000
All,
Can somebody tell me what the requirements are to upgrade a Mx000 from 2,4GHz to 2,66GHz
I know 1100 firmware and solaris 10_u8 with certain patches is required. But does customer need to upgrade the system-board?
Are 2,4GHz and 2,66GHz CMU's mixed in one domain supported as well?
In mine opinion a system-board 511-1600 is required.....
Kind regards
Joris

Re: Requirements for 2,66GHz cpu's in Mx000
Hi Joris,
First, let me point you to two informative documents.
At the top of the M-series community, you will find a link to the "XCP 1101 Product Notes".
Then in My Oracle Support we have the "SPARC Enterprise M3000/M4000/M5000/M8000/M9000 Server Matrix for Hardware, Firmware and Software (Doc ID 1145383.1)" .
Now to get to your questions. As you rightly mentioned, SPARC64 VII+ @2.66GHz CPU modules need XCP 1100 or later, we advise to always run the most recent version , which today is XCP1101 . Your domain needs Solaris 10 10/09 Update 8, plus the Recommended OS Patch Cluster .
Information on upgrading CPU modules can be found in the "SPARC Enterprise M4000/M5000/M8000/M9000 Servers CPU Upgrade Guide" . This document will tell you if there are any limitation or requirement when upgrading hardware.
It is important to get the terminology right, that way it is easier to match discussion like this to output of XSCF commands. Since you reference a M4000 part, I assume you are inquiring about the M4000 and M5000 machines. As such a CMU (CPU Memory Unit) only applies to the M8000 and M9000 series. On M4000 and M5000 the CPU modules plug directly into a board that is referred to as the motherboard. To upgrade these machines to SPARC64 VII+ @2.66GHz CPU Modules there is no need to upgrade the motherboard on existing servers.
The only thing you need to keep in mind is, that on the original motherboards, the new SPARC64 VII+ @2.66GHz CPU Modules will only use half (5.5MB) of the the L2 Cache. If the customer wishes to immediately use the full 11MB of L2 Cache, he also needs to by the new motherboard you referenced in your question.
Please let me know if this answers your question.
Kind regards,
Rene Fennet
