There’s a tremendous about of buzz lately about containers, and particularly Docker. Docker is poised to be a unifying technology, as it is an API for creating and managing applications, and is supported by Microsoft, AWS, Google, and Red Hat. Docker’s popularity is certainly driven by developers, and it is first and foremost a design aimed at Cloud-native applications. But, it seems people are failing to grasp how Docker will deliver efficiency in hosting and managing a broader range of legacy oriented stuff that populates data centers today.
Michael Campbell does a good job of articulating this for SQL Server, and I would argue that Oracle, Sharepoint, and other servers that are targeted toward workgroups and departments/projects will see similar benefits. Our firm has SQL Server running in Docker containers today, and we are excited by what we see it will bring to day-to-day IT operations! Michael’s blog on SQL and Containers and we share our thoughts in our own blog here. |
