Discrimination in employment
Reports have it that the Chinese Academy of Sciences has just announced that it would not recruit researches older than 35 for
positions in scientific innovation.
It is not rare to see similar descriptions in job advertisements:''Female under 25 with at least bachelor's degree, good looks preferred.''
The employers do not seem to think it is as important to disclose the job responsibilities as to lay out these conditions.
Admittedly, employers should have specific requirements for job positions. But such requirements should focus on qualifications
related to the position.
After all, people's capabilities are not necessarily connected to their age or education. As long as they are qualified for the
position with their experience and skills, there should not be gender, age, academic degree or appearance.
The limits set out in the recruiting advertisements are pure discrimination .They deprive many people of the right to find a good
job. They slow the free flow of talent i the job market.
Employers should pay more attention to viewing candidates'real capabilities instead of being picky about their appearance.
As a top research institute, the Chinese Academy of Sciences should not lay down'a rigid limit on researchers'age. When
researchers are over 35, they are probably rich in theoretical knowledge, practical experience and enthusiasm for academic study.
If they are refused by the academy, it would be a great loss both for the academy and the county. |
