n an enterprise environment, administrators often encounter situations where resource demand exceeds capacity. It is the administrator's job to prioritize among various workloads, providing varied quality of service across different applications. In cloud computing, for example, an administrator might need to grant an application control over the share of disk I/O among various virtual machines.
To address this, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 now supports control groups. Control Groups provide a mechanism for aggregating/partitioning sets of tasks, and all their future children, into groups with specialized behavior. Subsystems that support control groups can then provide resource controllers to schedule a resource or apply limits per control group.
The block I/O (blkio) controller provides weight-based proportional disk access to various control groups. This document describes the architecture and basic usage of blkio.
