Description:
Beginning with version 4.0 of the Veritas Volume Manager software, you can
use one of two options for initializing a disk.
* The "standard sliced-disk option" is still available.  Private region and public region reside on the partitions 3 and 4).
* The new "CDS format option" puts the private region and public region on slice 7.

Solution:
What is CDS?
CDS allows the private region and public region to be combined into a single slice, which allows for cross-platform data sharing. Sharing
data can be performed between heterogeneous systems (for example, SUN and HP), with each system having direct access to the physical devices used to hold the data.
If you are not planning to share data across platforms, and you prefer the "older" sliced-disk method, you can disable the CDS feature using the following procedure:

DISABLING CDS:
1. Start the 'vxdiskadm' utility.
2. Select option 22 "Change/Display the default disk layouts."
3. Select option 1 "Change/View preferences for use when initializing new disks."
4. Select option 1 "Store preferred format when initializing new disks."
5. Enter the desired format [cdsdisk, sliced ,simple,q,?] sliced.

NOTE:
Using the 'vxdiskadm' utility to initialize the disks only changes the default method of how disks are initialized.  If you use the 'vea' GUI, it always uses the CDS format, and that default cannot be changed. Information on how a disk is formatted is stored in the file /etc/default/vxdisk.
