Beijing OpenSolaris User Group 17th Meeting(June 26, 2008)

Hi All:

The 17th BJOSUG meeting will be on Thursday, June 26, and will include
discussions
on "OpenSolaris NIC Drivers and Update on 10G Support" and "Network
Driver Testing in OpenSolaris". Abstracts of the two presentations are
included below.

Food will be available at 6:30pm, with the presentations starting at
7:00 pm, and lasting
until 9:00pm. There will be time for Q&A after the presentations.
Seating will be limited.

Topic : OpenSolaris NIC Drivers and Update on 10G Support

BIO :
Ted You, Staff Engineer of Sun China ERI. Ted graduated from the
Institute of Computing Technology, CAS in 2000, obtained the MS degree
of Computer Science. He had been working on Data Networking and Telecom
software in Lucent Technology, Bell Labs for more than three years. In
early 2004, Ted joined Sun China ERI and engaged in the development of
Solaris NIC drivers. He has been focusing on the developement,
maintenance and performance tuning of the e1000g driver. Now he is
working with the NIC team on the development of several important
Gigabit and 10 Gigabit ethernet drivers.

Abstract :
OpenSolaris NIC drivers support Ethernet NICs from many different venders,
including 10/100MB fast ethernet, Gigabit ethernet, and 10GB ethernet
NICs. OpenSolaris NIC drivers are based on the GLDv3 framework, utilizing
the advanced hardware features of modern NICs, providing high quality
networking support with high stability and high performance for OpenSolaris.

Intel Oplin 10G Ethernet card is the latest offering from Intel. The
new ixgbe driver provides the support of this NIC in OpenSolaris. It
supports
hardware features provided by the Oplin NIC, such as MSI-X
interrupt, multiple receive rings (RSS) and multiple mac addresses. And
with the upcoming Crossbow framework, it will support multiple transmit
rings,
VMDq and polling. And it will support several advance IOAT features like
header split and DCA in the near future. By supporting all these
advanced features, ixgbe driver will enable support for high
performance networking and network virtualization for OpenSolaris.

BIO : Luo Tian(Robin) graduated from Fudan University, major in computer
software and
joined Solaris X86 departmant in SUN Microsystems in 2004. He has about
ten years of experience in network software development. Now he is
working on NIC driver testing technique and responsible for the NICDRV
project adn GLDv3-WiFi project.

Abstract :
How does one qualify a Solaris NIC driver？ SUN delivers the NICDRV test
suite
for NIC drivers. It contains functionality tests, performance tests and
stress tests. It provides code coverage analysis for assessment. NICDRV
has been accepted by Solaris quality engineering and get used regularly
and automatically; all NIC drivers must pass the NICDRV before it is
integrated into Solaris. NICDRV is opensourced, users can test and
help to develop as part of the OpenSolaris device driver community, it
is in the
network testing project.
