Part of the fun in MMORPGs is the fact that you can play as a member of a group. However, just like you would offline,

First, don't be greedy when it comes to looting items.

you were new yourself. I personally can't stand players that call players newbs in a derogatory manner - that's not constructive at all and it just gets players less willing to enjoy the game.
Next rule - don't be a leech.

In other words, when you join a group and go along on hunts and so forth, you'll get experience points. It's up to you to make sure you earn those experience points so that players don't kick you out of the group for not carrying your weight in the fight or hunt.
In combat situations, make sure you do your job.

If you're the tank (character designated to take damage as everybody else attacks or prepares magic),

act it. If you're a healer, hang back on the sidelines and let wounded characters come to you for help rather than getting in the fight yourself.

It's a good way for your character to get killed if that happens because healers tend to be rather weak physically.
As the tank,

position yourself in front of the enemy and let everybody else get behind. This does matter - a missed sword swing can damage party members as well as you, so try to avoid letting people into the path of the attack.
There has to be only one 'puller' per party - a puller is the party member that goes out and draws enemies to the group. This gets a higher agro rate.

Aggro is basically aggression, the likelihood of attack. Also, if you try to act as puller when someone else is already doing that job,

more enemies than you can handle may show up, sending your group toward a quick death.
After the hunt or fight's over,

thank your group members for a good time and offer (in-character) to buy the first round of drinks next time they stop by an inn.
