I have seen many reviews of the Alpha 400, and almost all of them complain about its being "underpowered". I ask "underpowered" for WHAT? Are they trying to transcode video in real time? Run major database apps? The thing has plenty of power for what it is meant to do, in some cases seeming faster than a regular notebook.
I own an Eee and an Asus Aspire One, and 99.99% of the time, when I use one of these "non-underpowered" devices, it is for something the Alpha 400 can do quite well, and sometimes faster.
Are people just trying to impress their friends? The way the gamers do? or do they want something they can actually use? Less CPU power translates into less power required, more battery life, and more money left in your pocket. A dragster can go faster than a Smart Car, but I would not suggest driving an "A" class fueler to the local market.
Notebook makers have kept their price points high, by piling high-end hardware into them that most people do not need. Finally someone has broken the "price point conspiracy" of the vendors.
A few short years ago a 400Mhz. MIPS machine would be considered a screamer, and many SGI machines were sold with far less MIPS horsepower, as "high-end" workstations.
Just because somebody makes something more expensive does not mean this machine is not a good bargain, for people who prefer to not be forced to purchase more hardware than they need. |
