Schemes for Establishing Robust and Efficient
Peer-to-Peer Streaming Media System

1. Introduction
Nowadays, Internet has become an indispensable component of human activities. It establishes a convenient channel to capture and spread information worldwide, and there are diverse applications providing various services over the Internet. Among these applications, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) system, which receives most concern, is considered to be the most suitable approach for addressing decentralized computing, file sharing, instant message, telephone and media streaming. That is because P2P systems have an efficient architecture to make a good load balance for the whole system, in which peers are both client and server. Source can be transferred from one peer to another without the support from a ‘traditional server’. However, due to an audience will not endure a slack playback of a media over the Internet, P2P streaming media systems have special demand on real-time service which requires the system is efficient, reliable and fault tolerant. It means requested media segments should be located over the overlay network in a relative short period. Especially when a source peer leaves or fails suddenly, the alternative source peers must be relocated before the playback is paused. In order to achieve this aim, scholars have proposed different P2P schemes and some approaches for improving the routing performance and the fault resiliency of P2P schemes. For instance, Centralized directory, Hierarchical overlay structure, Distributed Hash Table (DHT) based, Controlled flooding, Gossip based schemes and so forth. Nevertheless, some schemes only address one issue but ignore another. Therefore, the choice and the improvement of the exiting P2P schemes are the two most important factors for creating a robust and efficient P2P streaming media system. In this article, I will give a comprehensive discussion about the different DHT-based P2P schemes in the routing performance and the fault tolerance, and analysis the way to establish resilient and smooth P2P streaming media system.
The remainder of the paper is organized as follows. Section 2 presents a brief introduction of various P2P schemes. In Section 3, I discuss the routing performance of the P2P schemes. The resilience of the DHT-based P2P schemes are explored in Section 4. Finally, I point out the disadvantages of different DHT-based P2P schemes and give a potential research direction in Section 5.
