Oracle Database Administrator
The Oracle DBA interfaces with multiple members of the BSkyB technical and support teams. The DBA demonstrates an enterprise view and understanding of systems and technologies. The DBA is responsible for database design, installation, maintenance, monitoring, and upgrades of database systems. This includes documenting systems in accordance with company standards. The DBA serves as a point of escalation and review for issues or concerns identified by the customer or the monitoring system on a 24x7 basis.
The DBA will help develop solutions to improve database environments and enhance server reliability and performance. The DBA is responsible for designing database solutions to best meet customer needs, as well as making and presenting recommendations to improve existing infrastructures.
DBA Skills required:
• Designing and implementing database solutions based on development team requests and needs
• Presenting the development team with recommendations regarding hardware and software.
• Installing database software, maintaining appropriate maintenance levels and tuning.
• Evaluating, recommending, installing and configuring database related software to meet customer requirements
• Installing and configuring tools for event monitoring, capacity planning, performance monitoring, etc. and making recommendations based on results.
• Level 3 troubleshooting and resolution of database problems.
• Leading technical projects from start to finish while working within organizational change management and project management guidelines.
• Performing database upgrades including planning, scheduling, testing, and coordination with the customer.
• Performing database backups and recoveries.
• Responding to outages both during normal business hours and in an after-hours, on-call capacity.
• Producing documentation for use in configuration, repair and troubleshooting of managed database systems.
• Coordinating and interfacing with other department team members, and service providers to resolve issues.
• Participating in capacity planning and disaster recovery exercises while producing supporting documentation.
• Taking initiative on special projects to improve the overall operation and move the group forward on new technologies, areas of expertise and overall business growth.
DBA Responsibilities Include:
• Oracle RDBMS installation, tuning, and version upgrades.
• Expertise in Oracle versions 8.0.6 to 10g.
• Oracle RDBMS on Solaris and Unix
• Extensive experience with Oracle HA Systems such as: 9i and 10g RAC, Oracle Data Guard, and Clustered File Systems like ASM and OCFS implemented on Redhat Linux versions 3.x and 4.x.
• Implementing Disaster Recovery and Backup solutions.
• PL SQL creation and tuning.
• Troubleshooting database and SQL performance issues.
• Experience in technical concepts coupled with the ability to communicate complex technical information in straightforward terms.
• Experience with and a broad understanding of implementing and managing complex technical projects with the ability to solve technical problems.
• Willingness to thrive and succeed in a fast-paced, dynamic 24X7 environment
Systems Engineer:
Summary
The System Engineer (SE) interfaces with multiple members of the BSkyB development organization and service desk. The SE demonstrates an enterprise view and understanding of systems and technologies. The SE is responsible for system design, installation and maintenance of hardware products, installation and maintenance of operating systems, monitoring and planning tools/processes, fundamentals of security, installing third party software, back up configuration and restoration of files, system patches, security updates and system upgrades. This includes documenting systems in accordance with company standards. The SE serves as a point of escalation and review for issues or concerns identified by the service desk or the monitoring system on a 24x7 basis.
The SE provides project leadership and develops solutions to improve the environment and enhance server performance and reliability. The SE is responsible for designing solutions to best meet customer needs as well as making and presenting recommendations to improve existing infrastructures. The SE works closely with the Operations Manager to ensure deliverables are met.
Responsibilities include
• Designing system solutions based on development team requests and needs
• Presenting the development team with recommendations regarding hardware and systems software.
• Installing hardware and software, maintaining appropriate maintenance levels and tuning.
• Evaluating, recommending, installing and configuring hardware and software to meet development team requirements.
• Installing and configuring tools for event monitoring, capacity planning, performance monitoring, etc. and making recommendations based on results
• Level 3 troubleshooting and resolution of application and system related problems.
• Leading technical projects from start to finish while working within organizational change management and project management guidelines.
• Performing system software upgrades including planning / scheduling, testing, coordination, and maintaining integrity of the operating system environment.
• Performing backup administration, including backup and restore of data.
• Responding to outages both during normal business hours and in an after-hours, on-call capacity.
• Producing documentation for use in configuration, repair and troubleshooting of hardware, software and network operating systems.
• Participating in capacity planning and disaster recovery exercises while producing supporting documentation.
Skills required
• 2 - 4 years of experience in IT and/or production enterprise environments.
• Experience in technical concepts coupled with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical information in straightforward terms
• Experience with and a broad understanding of implementing and managing complex technical projects with the ability to solve technical problems
• Pro-active, hands-on, and able to motivate others
• Ability to succeed and excel in a fast-paced, dynamic 24X7 environment.
• Experience leading a project from start to finish and managing the activities of a project based team
• Ability to identify and implement standardized processes across the operating environment.
• Experience with hardware and software troubleshooting, and issue resolution
• Ability to design and implement hardware and software solutions based on development team requirements
• Expertise in Linux/Unix operating systems in addition to WebSphere, Tomcat, and Apache. Also including associated protocols and tools, such as TCP/IP, Samba, NFS, tcpdump, etc.
• Experience a plus with Solaris, Windows, Java, .net, infobase, Oracle, MySQL, VMWare, Vignette, CMS, Nagios, Gomez.
