关于安装程序时的依赖==

我看到这样一段文字
Both RPM and Debian packages rely on a database of information about installed packages for normal operation. This database includes the names of all installed files, checksum information on those files, the names and version numbers of the packages to which they belong, and the other packages upon which each package depends. This database is invaluable in managing software.
我的问题是，这个database是一个正儿八经的数据库还是就是一个文件，记录了一条条的信息。在那里可以看到他。
软件安装时的依赖关系指什么？我的认识是，unix下的应用程序不就是可执行文件和一些库，包括共享库。那么这个 “依赖”是不是主要指共享库呢？

初学，问的也许逻辑混乱。
请明白人给讲讲。

软件包里就有依赖说明，只是管理工具（下面以apt为例），将软件的这些信息集中了起来。
这里的database可以是db文件，也可以是其它apt要用到的文件。
一般都放在/var/cache/apt下或/var/lib/dpkg下
rpm的一般在/var/lib/rpm下
