Job Summary:
The Systems Engineer will be responsible for the deployment, administration, monitoring, analysis and support of ’s application services and the systems, servers, and databases on which they are deployed. The services run on 24x7 mission critical, high-availability systems with data replication and disaster recovery across multiple data centers. The Systems Engineer will conduct systems programming and support activities such as application software updates, maintaining backup scripts, and maintaining and automating monitoring systems.
Primary Duties:
The Systems Engineer will perform a variety of duties to fulfill this role:
• Respond to and resolve complex information system (application, server, and network) hardware and software problems utilizing troubleshooting documentation and a variety of hardware and software tools and techniques.
• Follow established policies and processes for systems management
• Support, debug, maintain, deploy and implement application programs in support of various functional areas (customer facing and internal systems).
• Maintain data center infrastructure – install new equipment and operating systems, deploy applications and VM’s, troubleshoot and repair hardware, and retire end of life equipment.
• Manage VMware systems in engineering and production – deploy new VM’s, track capacity, update templates and perform backups.
• Manage and document production system backup and recovery procedures for offsite disk and tape storage.
• Document system configurations, server, OS, and VM build practices, backup procedures, troubleshooting guides, and keep infrastructure drawings current with changes.
• Coordinate with group members ensuring all documentation and procedures are kept current and accurate (Service Requests, logs, internal procedures, configuration documentation, etc.).
• Maintain OS patching and virus scanning system updates across systems.
• Automate system monitoring and maintenance tasks by creating scripts and applications or identifying and evaluating off the shelf tools.
• Analyze and resolve problems involving interaction between applications, server hardware/firmware/OS and storage by working with software developers, QA, and equipment vendors.
• Support production applications, servers, and networks by responding to incidents, restoring service as quickly as possible, and investigating root causes for outages and maintaining incident logs.
• Provide 24x7 on-call support for production systems and applications, including Windows, Linux, and Solaris systems on a rotational basis.
• The System Engineer may be required to work a shifted hourly or daily schedule in a fixed pattern (subject to change) in order to support a 24x7 operating environment; periodically cross-train on the opposing shifts.
• Perform end-to-end system test procedures to verify system functional operation after changes and incidents.
• Implement approved or emergency changes without unplanned/unscheduled customer/ user impact.
• Provide analysis and support, acting as primary contact with customers, technical supports, vendors and engineering groups to ensure proper resolution of problems.
• Actively participate in, and support ISO 9000 or like certification efforts.
• Troubleshoot and resolve customer support tickets, or escalate problems, in a timely manner, ensuring service level objectives are met or exceeded, and sound judgment is exercised at all times.
• Perform analysis and provide information regarding actual or potential problems. When and where possible, utilize the data to resolve and/or improve performance of the service.
• Maintain a working knowledge of configurations and work with vendors, Systems Engineering and/or Development as needed to resolve problems.
• Ensure Quality Checks (QCs) are performed and recorded as documented.
• Provide timely and accurate status of all activities to appropriate team members and management as required.
• Conduct activities with quality – customer satisfaction and process improvement – in mind.
• Develop and maintain a working knowledge of the IT Operations-supported network and system architectures and services to allow support of critical problem.
• The System Engineer must have the ability to work independently with general to detailed instructions on new assignments.
• Serve as Host master, creating and maintaining internet domain identities on behalf of the company
Position Requirements: (List characteristics, skills, and degrees preferred; years of experience required)
• The candidate should have a BS degree in an IT related field or equivalent training and experience managing systems in an enterprise, mission critical environment.
• Must exhibit positive team attitude, flexibility, and pride of workmanship in all day-to-day activities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Ability to resolve complex technical problems and implementing resolutions based on standard practices, policies, procedures and specifications.
• Proficient with Windows servers
• Proficient with configuring and managing VMware sytems
• Experience installing, configuring, and managing Linux, and Solaris systems.
• Ability to develop software tools or scripts to automate monitoring and data collection tasks using shell scripting, Perl, VB, SQL, etc.
• Experience working with system monitoring tools e.g. Sitescope
• Interest in learning new disciplines.
• Experience with IP networking and configuring Cisco switches and routers and EMC SAN equipment is a plus.
• Flexibility to work off-hours to accommodate scheduled changes.
• Ability to be on call 24x7 on a weekly rotation.
• Ability to lift and move servers, monitors, and other equipment up to 35lb.
