Event Time..........: Thu Jan 24 17:44:49 2013
Severity............: MAJORWARNING
Monitor.............: armmon
Event #.............: 16
System..............: xywg2
Summary:
Disk Array at hardware path :
One or more of the batteries in the Controller in slot Y have
failed.
Description of Error:
This event message is displayed when there is not enough electrical
charge on one of the battery packs in the indicated controller to
maintain NVRAM.
Each controller contains two battery packs. If both battery packs
cannot provide the minimum protection for the NVRAM, then the
controller refuses to boot. Without NVRAM protection, all user data
may be lost. When a battery pack has been fully charged and then
enters the warning state, it may last only about an hour or less if
called upon to protect NVRAM.
The following battery behavior should be noted:
1. In order to assess the reliability of the batteries, periodic
checks are made by the controller firmware.
2. In addition to other tests, each battery is deliberately discharged
occasionally and then recharged, to make sure it can be relied
upon. These test conditions are not reported as battery warning or
battery dead conditions.
3. To avoid leaving NVRAM unprotected, if a controller has one dead
battery pack, the testing process skips the discharge testing of
its other battery.
4. A discharged battery should normally recharge promptly when power
is supplied to the disk array. Therefore, a battery warning or
battery dead condition generally goes away without any operator
intervention required.
5. Any such condition that persists for longer than about an hour
should be acted upon, or an otherwise functional controller (one
that has both battery packs dead or missing) will not boot.
6. A non-functioning controller cannot report the status of its
batteries. The other controller (if present) reports the condition
(dead or missing).
Possible causes include:
1. Power has never been applied, and the batteries need to be charged.
2. Power has been off so long that the charge in the batteries has been
used up.
Probable Cause / Recommended Action:
Replace both batteries (replace them one at a time, to preserve NVRAM)
in the indicated controller.
