1. What is a locale?
A locale is a collection of files, data, and sometimes code, which contain the necessary information to adapt Solaris to a specific geographical market. It is essentially a "bundle", containing information such as the messages displayed to the user, interface component information, for example the size of the buttons; cultural information such as dates and currency formats, and fonts or other writing specific information. More.

2. What locales are provided with Solaris?

4. Where can I get specific locales?
There are no downloads for Solaris locales. For Solaris 2.6 and Solaris 7:
You can get complete localized versions from the Sun Global Application Developer Kit 1.0. ( costs approx US $295 and it includes all locales supported for Solaris 2.6 and Solaris 7). Part number for:
Sun Global Application Developer Kit 1.0 P/N#: GDKM9-100-T999. Visit Sun Store.
For Solaris 7 only see SunStore.
For Solaris 8, all locales are bundled with the base distribution. In earlier versions of Solaris, for example, the Japanese Solaris distribution was an entirely different distribution to, say English Solaris. That is the Japanese Solaris distribution had its own CD_ROMs.
Now however, when you buy Solaris 8, you receive several CD_ROMs:
The Solaris OS CD-ROMs (x2): contains the Solaris 8 Operating System plus all partial locales.
The Language CD-ROM: contains message translations for our 9 core languages (French, Italian ,German, Spanish, Swedish, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean), plus some locale specific utilities. More.

5. What is the difference between a partial and a full locale?
A partial locale provides support for date/time format, monetary and numeric format, and collation sequence.
A partial locale also defines printable characters, uppercase and lowercase characters, and graphic characters.
A full locale provides the same information plus translated system messages.

8. Can I install Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and European locales on the same Solaris system?
Yes.
From Solaris 8, all Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and European locales are included on the base CD with localised messages on a separate "Language" CD. These locales and messages are installed through the installation procedure.
For step-by-step instructions on installing multiple locales and languages onto a system running the Solaris 2.6 operating environment, see http://sun.com/software/white-papers/wp-multilocale/ .

9. I want to install a German locale. How many German locales are there? Are they full or partial locales?
There are 3 Germany German locales in Solaris 8 (there are also Austrian and Swiss German locales):
de_DE.ISO8859-1: Based on 8859-1 codeset (Latin script)
de_DE.ISO8859-15: Based on 8859-15 codeset (Latin script with Euro currency support)
de_DE.UTF-8: Based on Unicode standard (UTF-8 encoding). Support multiple scripts (Latin,Arabic,Hebrew,Chinese,Japanese,Korean)
Message translations are included on Langauges CD. So, if you didn't install Lang CD, then they are partial locales. However if installed with the Lang CD, they are full locales.
